COVID-19 Among Reasons for Fewer HI EMS Crews

Sept. 26, 2023
Honolulu Emergency Services Director Dr. Jim Ireland said there's an increase in COVID-19 in the department.

COVID-19 was among the reasons nine of 21 ambulances in Honolulu were out of service Sunday night.

Honolulu Emergency Services Director Dr. Jim Ireland said he's starting to see an increase in COVID in the department, KHON reported.

“Unfortunately, COVID will not go away. We can mitigate it the best way we can but it’s still here.”

He said three AMR ambulances helped cover the shifts.

Ireland added that Sundays are usually a slower day for ambulance transports. But, crews responded along with the Honolulu Fire Department to two rescues. One at Makaha trail to treat a person who fell about 20 feet while riding an electric bike and an air rescue of an injured hiker at Koko Head.

He added that 50 additional personnel will be joining the department by the end of the year.
